Auburn is on the verge of having the state Legislature consider a request for a tax on hotel stays and short-term rentals, but the potential downside of such a tax should not be dismissed.
The 5% tax would be an addition to a 5% levy already in place for hotel rooms in Cayuga County.
While the current occupancy tax supports county tourism initiatives, the additional charge would support any city costs associated with tourism.

Auburn officials have said the tax is needed to cover increased emergency services and wear and tear on infrastructure created by more people visiting the area. But maintaining a safe and stable environment for residents and visitors should be a given, and tourists already pay sales taxes that support city services as well.
Auburn and the surrounding area is overflowing with cultural and recreational opportunities, including unique shops, restaurants, historic landmarks, performing arts, wineries, breweries, lakes and parks. Visitors spend tens of millions of dollars annually, and support hundreds of jobs.
The county Office of Tourism pledges that "each visit promises to be a journey filled with warmth, authenticity and the true spirit of hospitality."
Auburn has a big role to play in maintaining that spirit of hospitality, and the city needs to be careful to not harm a booming tourist industry. We should be welcoming tourists in every way possible, not making their visits more expensive. We hope City Council keeps that in mind when considering any moves that might be counterproductive.
