We were surprised to learn that until recently, it was illegal for anyone other than a master plumber to replace certain fixtures in homes in Auburn — and we're glad to see that rule has now been changed.
A rule adopted in 2010 required a plumbing permit to replace dishwashers, garbage disposals, showerheads, faucets, toilets and more, and permits could only be given to those "proven qualified and competent by the plumbing board to install plumbing and drainage in this city."

Not surprisingly, Auburn Mayor Jimmy Giannettino said he's been contacted by residents asking why they should have to hire a plumber for small jobs they could easily take care of themselves.
In response, City Council approved a resolution in March to amend the plumbing code. Residents will now be able to obtain permits to replace those fixtures, and jobs requiring more extensive plumbing work will require passing a $10 exam assessing knowledge of the city's plumbing code.Â
We're not sure why the rules were so strict, as people should be allowed to replace a showerhead or a toilet without hiring a plumber. It comes down to common sense. People are free to call professionals if they need help, but anyone comfortable with doing these small jobs safely shouldn't need permission.
Changing Auburn's plumbing code just makes sense, and it's a great example of government being responsive to the public it serves.
