Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said Wednesday that Route 38A and secondary roads in the southern part of the county have reopened after being closed due to flooding.
Schenck urged motorists to use caution when driving, watch for flooding that could affect their travel and be aware that debris could be left in the roads.
The sheriff's office on Tuesday night announced the closure of several roads in Cayuga County due to flooding. Route 38A from Dewitt Road in the town of Niles to Sayles Corners Road in the town of Moravia was closed.
The sheriff's office added that other roads in the area, as well as roads in King Ferry and the southern part of the county, were flooded and impassable at the time.
According to National Weather Service reports, the southbound side of the bridge on Old State Road in Niles was washed out. The intersection at Murray and Twelve Corners roads was closed due to high water.
The Village of Jordan Police Department also said Tuesday night that Mechanic Street was closed between South Chappell and Main, Elbridge Street is closed between South Main and South Skaneateles, and Valley Drive is closed between Elbridge Street and Crego Road. A state of emergency was declared in the village, but as of 4:30 a.m. all roads were reported as passable and open.
The National Weather Service said up to 2.5 inches of rain fell in some areas Tuesday, with an additional two inches of rain possible in the area covered by a flood warning.
