The long-sought upgrade for the tennis tournaments in Madrid and Rome has been a bonanza for the organizers by expanding them from one to nearly two weeks. There are more competition days which means more tickets sold, more TV time and more money. But the players haven't been as enthusiastic. Recent Monte Carlo Masters champion Stefanos Tsitsipas says "You got to be some type of superhero to be consistent back-to-back 10 days in each event getting to the very end of it." Adds former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, "We stretched the drama a bit too much" and "it kind of becomes like the 'telenova' that was too many seasons."

Caitlin Clark had yet to even be drafted by the Indiana Fever before fans were openly calling for her to be given an honorary role at the Indianapolis 500. She's been a resident of Indiana for just about a month and is already one of the biggest stars in the city. Her WNBA home debut with the Fever comes Thursday night, deep into preparations for the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500. Anticipation to see the No. 1 overall draft was so high that drivers were checking their daily schedules to see if there was room to see Clark play the New York Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker may have stirred controversy for his proclamations of conservative politics and Catholicism, but he received a standing ovation at the May 11 commencement ceremony at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. The fast-growing college is part of a constellation of conservative Catholic colleges that tout their adherence to church teachings and practice. It is part of a larger conservative movement in parts of the Catholic Church. The college also is home to more traditional expressions of Catholicism, such as the Latin Mass, all-night prayer vigils and a strict code of conduct.

How much has golf changed in the 10 years since the PGA Championship was last at Valhalla? Rory McIlroy is the No. 2 player in the world ranking then and now. He is coming off two straight wins just like in 2014. Tiger Woods had health questions, just like now. But there are plenty of differences. The purse was $10 million. At the time that was a record for a major championship. Now it's half of what a signature event is on the PGA Tour. And Dustin Johnson was absent while on a curious leave of absence.

Rory McIlroy has all the momentum he could want heading into the PGA Championship as he tries to end a drought in the majors that has lasted a decade. He also has a major distraction. McIlroy is hopeful of ending a decade without a major in his return to Valhalla. But the distraction is a divorce from his wife of seven years. That petition was filed in Florida on Monday, right after he won at Quail Hollow and before flying up to Louisville for a major. McIlroy has a history of being able to separate personal life from work.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. 鈥 Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is getting attention for comments he made during a commencement address at Benedictine College last weekend in which he congratulated the women receiving degrees, but then said most were probably more excited to get married and have children.

The stars have aligned for the WNBA with Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese joining the ranks of A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi and others. The league is getting unparalleled attention. Now the challenge for the WNBA is to translate this hype and hoopla into a movement and not just a moment in its history.

Formula One driver Alex Albon has signed a multiyear contract extension with Williams to end speculation about his future. Team principal James Vowles called it "a huge vote of confidence" in the once-dominant team's rebuild. Williams says the new deal will keep the 28-year-old Albon at the team "into the new era of Formula 1 regulations," which start in 2026. It did not give more details. The announcement came ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this weekend. The British-born Thai driver had been linked with moves to both Red Bull and Mercedes. He was under contract at Williams through 2025.

Pato O'Ward picked up his first trophy in nearly two years when he arrived at Arrow McLaren's team lounge in Indianapolis last weekend. It wasn't the victory celebration he'd planned for his first IndyCar win since July 2022, but it was unusual: He won by default when Josef Newgarden was disqualified for cheating.聽

The WNBA experienced an unprecedented spike in merchandise sales following the drafting of Caitlin Clark, whose jerseys sold out instantly. This phenomenon has not only highlighted the league's miscalculation in demand forecasting but also underscored the potential economic impact on host ci…
