Cayuga County has spent nearly half of the $2 million it budgeted to prepare the space at 63 Genesee St. in Auburn for staff.
Lynn Marinelli, the county's budget director, told the county Legislature's Ways and Means Committee Tuesday that $890,000 has been spent on various expenses, including equipment, furniture and rent.
Marinelli projects that the county will spend nearly $1.5 million to outfit the downtown Auburn building. The leftover funds could be used to cover costs of relocating other departments affected by the closure of the Cayuga County Office Building.
Cayuga County is paying $29,005 a month, or $348,060 a year, to rent the building at the corner of Genesee and North streets. The main tenant will be the county Department of Social Services, which was displaced when the county office building closed last year due to the presence of asbestos-containing vermiculite.
Because the Department of Social Services will occupy the building, some of the costs will be eligible for reimbursement.
Marinelli revealed the county began paying to rent the building in December. The county paid $12,500 monthly for the first few months while it worked to prepare the space. March was the first month that it paid $29,005 for rent.
The Department of Social Services has not moved in yet, but a target date has been set. Cayuga County Legislature Chairman Jonathan Anna confirmed Wednesday that the goal is to have the department begin moving in on May 1.
County legislators approved the multi-year lease in September. The building is the former home of Lyons National Bank and owned by Grant Kyle, a former legislator.
Legislator Aileen McNabb-Coleman, who served as chair in 2024, told 水果派AV in November that several locations were considered.聽
The county will rent the building for the next two years. There is an option to renew the lease for five more years.
