Residents of the Union Springs Central School District will vote later this month on a $4.7 million capital project that would fund several athletic facility upgrades and air conditioning.
The project will be voted on along with the district's proposed budget and board candidates as part of the annual statewide vote on Tuesday, May 20. Union Springs Superintendent Dr. Jarett Powers told 水果派AV the聽$4,747,367 project wouldn't cause an additional tax impact for residents, as it would be funded mostly through state aid and $500,000 in capital reserve funds.
According to the district's website, the project would include athletic facility upgrades like resurfacing the track and outdoor basketball and tennis courts at the junior-senior high school, as well as replacing the scoreboard. The field would receive an enhanced sound system and lights to allow football, track and soccer to continue into the evening, particularly in the fall.

Additional upgrades would include installing concession and community-accessible bathroom spaces, overhauling the locker rooms to meet contemporary student needs for storage, strengthening internet accessibility, and lighting, flooring and masonry improvements. The gymnasiums at A.J. Smith Elementary School and the high school would have聽air conditioning聽installed as well.
The elementary school's cafeteria would also get AC. It doesn't have windows for security reasons, the district said, so due to the kitchen it can get warm for the 200 children eating lunch there at a time.
Noting that many of the district's athletic facilities are at least 20 years old, Powers said they are among the spots where community members celebrate local children.
"Having an opportunity to provide them with safe, modern, updated facilities for both community use and student use helps us continue to be excellent in our athletic pursuits," he said.聽

The superintendent said the capital project, if approved, would also be supported by a six-figure donation from an anonymous community member who has supported past district projects.聽
"That same individual is committed to our students, is committed to athletic opportunities, committed to community use of our spaces and wanted to participate in this project," Powers said.
"We're very grateful and appreciative of their support."聽
Construction could begin by summer or fall 2026 if residents approve the project, depending on the state's approval process.
"We are appreciative of the community's consideration of our project," Powers said.
"We look forward to having modern facilities for our students to use so they can continue to be some of the best athletes in our state."
