Nora Burroughs' introduction to competitive running came in fifth grade 鈥 when she took part in the 41st annual Great Race with her family.
Now, as she prepares to graduate from Auburn High School and run competitively in college nearly seven years later, her athletic journey has come full circle. Burroughs has been selected as the winner of this year鈥檚 Frank Ruggiero Scholarship Award, the Great Race鈥檚 annual scholarship given out to a college-bound student who has shown what it means to serve their community.聽
鈥淚t does mean a lot because the Great Race started my high school running journey,鈥 Burroughs told 水果派AV. 鈥淣ow it kind of brings my high school running to a close.鈥
Burroughs began her high school running career at Southern Cayuga, but transferred to become a Maroon after her freshman year.

As a junior last year, she advanced to the state championships and placed 21st in the 800-meter run.聽
To go along with the time she spent on the track, Burroughs made an impact in her community. Over her four years in high school, she helped clean and move desks each summer and winter at St. Albert the Great Academy in Auburn. She also helped out with modified track and field meets, and volunteered at Genesee Elementary School.聽
鈥淚 feel like volunteering is very selfless,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t kind of shapes how you view the world, and just being able to give to other people and not having to do something for money all the time. It also brings a sense of fulfillment to me to know that you have an impact and to be able to help other people through what you are doing.鈥
With Burroughs set to attend Hamilton College this fall, she said she hopes to continue volunteering. As a Continental, she plans to major in biology and join the track and field and cross-country teams.聽
鈥淣ora is the person that everyone wants on their team, class or workplace,鈥 Auburn鈥檚 cross-country, indoor and outdoor track coach Karen Brady wrote in her letter of recommendation to the Great Race committee. 鈥淣ot only will she put her all toward the desired outcome, her positive influence will brighten the day of all that are around her, no matter the environment. She is a coach's dream that you only see come around once in a blue moon. I'm excited to see where she goes from here, as it will undoubtedly be something special and the influence she will leave behind, unforgettable.鈥
