A town justice in Cayuga County has resigned after admitting to driving drunk in October.
Lucas Ferrin, who was elected Conquest town justice in 2023, agreed to step down as a condition of his guilty plea, according to the state Commission on Judicial Conduct. The commission launched an investigation after Ferrin's arrest in October.
The New York State Police told 水果派AV that Ferrin was arrested after troopers stopped him on State Street Road in the town of Mentz. Ferrin refused to exit the vehicle before he was assisted by troopers. He also refused field sobriety tests, state police said.
Ferrin was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, both misdemeanors.
In April, the state Commission on Judicial Conduct notified the judge in Ferrin's criminal case that it was investigating a complaint related to the arrest. Ferrin resigned as part of a plea deal to satisfy his DWI charge. He also agreed not to seek judicial office in the future.
"Driving while intoxicated and related offenses endanger not just the inebriated driver but passengers, others on the road, pedestrians and police officers in pursuit," said Robert Tembeckjian, administrator and counsel of the state Commission on Judicial Conduct.
Tembeckjian continued, "Judges, who are required by ethics rules to respect and comply with the law, must be especially mindful of setting the right example in this regard, since their conduct on or off the bench is so often scrutinized and publicized."
Ferrin was in the first of his four-year term as town justice in Conquest. The town has another justice, David Morgan.
