An Auburn man was arrested this week for allegedly violating an order of protection and attempting to conceal evidence of it by throwing his cellphone to a bystander during his arrest.
In a news release Thursday, the Auburn Police Department said it was contacted June 9 by a person who has an order of protection against Kenneth M. Lafler, 34. He was contacting the victim repeatedly through Facebook Messenger, text and voice messages, they said.
The next day, officers found Lafler walking in the area of Bostwick Avenue and Fort Street and attempted to take him into custody. But he resisted arrest, threw his cellphone to an uninvolved individual and told them to take it to prevent police from recovering evidence of him contacting the victim, the department said. When an officer tried to grab the phone, Lafler grabbed his arm to try to stop him.
Lafler was ultimately taken into custody and charged with the felonies of aggravated family offense and tampering with physical evidence, and the misdemeanors of resisting arrest and second-degree criminal contempt. He was transported to the Cayuga County Jail and held there pending arraignment.
