Two months after it closed, the Cortland Standard will reopen.
Sample News Group has acquired the newspaper and plans to resume publication on Saturday, May 17. The newspaper will follow its prior printing schedule of Tuesday through Saturday, according to a news release.
"We are honored to revive publication of the Cortland Standard for the community," said George "Scoop" Sample, owner of Sample News Group. "Cortland deserves the opportunity to stay informed and engaged through a vibrant local newspaper. We look forward to ensuring that the thriving community of Cortland does not turn into a news desert."
The Cortland Standard filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in March and ceased publication. Evan Geibel, who was the fifth-generation owner of the newspaper, cited declining readership and increasing costs for the closure. Seventeen employees lost their jobs.
Before it closed, the newspaper had been published for 157 years.聽
Sample News Group owns 30 local websites, 18 daily newspapers and 38 weeklies and specialty magazines. Its New York publications include The Daily News in Batavia and The Palladium Times in Oswego.
Mindy Lawrence, publisher of the Oswego County Media Group that is part of Sample News Group, will oversee the Cortland Standard. Her experience includes working as the advertising and marketing director at the newspaper.
"The closure of the Cortland Standard hit me in the heart, as it did many of our readers," Lawrence said in a statement. "It left Cortland as a news desert. Within days of the closure, the team at Sample News Group and I got to work, figuring out how we could return this important community institution to the public. I am honored to be on this team that is relaunching the Cortland Standard."
The Cortland Standard was founded in 1867. At the time of its closure, it was the second-oldest family-owned news organization in New York.
