A union representing health care workers is supporting several Democratic candidates in Cayuga County races, while a group representing town highway officials is supporting the Conservative candidate for county clerk.Â
1199SEIU, which has up to 600 members in Cayuga County, has endorsed Jimmy Giannettino for Auburn mayor, Brian Scanlan for Cayuga County clerk and two candidates, Christina Calarco and Rhoda Overstreet-Wilson, running for Auburn city council.Â
The union is also supporting three incumbent county legislators, Aileen McNabb-Coleman, Brian Muldrow and Heidi Nightengale, and another candidate — Stephanie DeVito — seeking an open county Legislature seat.Â
Sara Cooper, 1199SEIU's political coordinator, said in a statement that Giannettino has been a "longtime ally" of health care workers and unions in the city.Â
Regarding the other candidates receiving the labor group's endorsement, Cooper added that they are "union strong and we know we can count on them whenever we need their support."Â
State campaign finance records show that two candidates, Nightengale and Overstreet-Wilson, have each received $1,000 donations from the union's political arm.Â
Meanwhile, the Cayuga County Town Highway Superintendents Association has made an endorsement in the three-way race for county clerk.
The group is supporting Kristine Lytle, a Conservative, to succeed Sue Dwyer as clerk.Â
Stephen Fedrizzi, who serves as highway superintendent in the town of Venice and president of the Cayuga County Town Highway Superintendents Association, called Lytle "the strongest candidate for this position, as she has the most experience in this role and knows the needs of the people of Cayuga County."Â
Lytle has been an employee with the county DMV office for 16 years, including 13 in a supervisory role. The county clerk oversees the DMV office.Â
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7. Early voting begins Saturday, Oct. 28 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 5.Â
