A Democratic candidate has emerged to run for the vacant Cayuga County Legislature seat after Stephanie DeVito resigned at the end of April.
Amy Sargent is seeking the Democratic endorsement in a special election for the open District 10 seat. The district includes the southeastern neighborhoods in the city of Auburn.
Sargent, a Cayuga native, told 水果派AV she has been raising her family in District 10 for the last 10 years. Her belief in public service is what motivated her to run for the county Legislature seat.
"When challenges are complex and the need for smart, collaborative governance is greater than ever, I'm excited to step forward and try to be part of the solution," Sargent said. "I feel like my experience equips me to contribute to thoughtful and responsible discussions that put the needs of our community first."

Amy Sargent, of Auburn, is seeking the Democratic endorsement to run for the vacant Cayuga County Legislature District 10 seat.
Sargent is a graduate of SUNY Empire and earned a master's degree in public administration at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She worked at Unity House of Cayuga County before joining Liberty Resources, a health care nonprofit where she serves as senior director of operations.
She is also a member of the city of Auburn Planning Board and sits on the board of directors for the Auburn Junior Doubledays.
"She's a super, super candidate," said Dia Carabajal, chair of the Cayuga County Democratic Committee.
Carabajal explained that the formal process for endorsing Sargent will occur after the primary election in June. Because DeVito resigned after the petitioning period ended, the parties will select their candidates for the special election in November.
Cayuga County Republicans already backed Michael Pettigrass for the District 10 seat. Pettigrass narrowly lost to DeVito in 2023.
DeVito's resignation has left District 10 without representation as the county faces several challenges. The Legislature implemented a temporary hiring freeze due to a budget crisis and the Cayuga County Office Building has been closed since May 2024 after vermiculite was found on the upper floors.
Sargent told 水果派AV that if she is elected as a county legislator, her priorities will include fiscal responsibility, health and safety.
"How to be as thoughtful and efficient as possible with things, I think, is going to be really important," she said.
It is possible that Sargent will be appointed before the special election. Carabajal is hopeful that the county Legislature will exercise its authority to fill the vacancy until the election is held in November.
Carabajal cited a local law that, she says, requires the Legislature to appoint a Democrat for a seat vacated by another Democrat. Local Republican and Conservative leaders dispute this while making the case for the Legislature to appoint Pettigrass.
The last time the county Legislature filled a vacant seat was in 2021, when Mark Strong was appointed after Charlie Ripley's resignation.
