More than a year after it was listed for sale聽and nearly two decades after it closed, the former Bombardier plant in Auburn has a new owner.
Auburn East LLC, an affiliate of St. Louis-based Commercial Development Co., has acquired the 15-acre property on Orchard Street. The property was sold by Alstom, which acquired Bombardier Transportation in 2021.
According to its website, Commercial Development Co. is a real estate firm that specializes in acquiring and redeveloping distressed or underutilized properties, such as the former Bombardier plant.
"Our acquisition of this historic manufacturing represents a turning point for a property that has tremendous potential but has sat underutilized for far too long," said Mark Hinds, executive vice president of acquisitions for the Commercial Development Co.

Hinds continued, "Our team is well equipped to reposition this site for its next stage of life, likely to be manufacturing, warehousing or industrial operations."
The property, which features several buildings and 237,480 square feet of industrial space, has been vacant since Bombardier closed it in 2006.
The plant was first used by the McIntosh & Seymour Diesel Engine Co. in 1886. It was later part of Alco before it was acquired by Bombardier.
With the sale of the property, it's the most significant development yet in the city's attempt to revive the manufacturing facility.
Alstom met with local officials and agreed to market the property. In May 2023, the state awarded an $8.5 million grant to rehabilitate the former Bombardier plant. Later that year, the facility was listed for sale.
"The former Alco/Bombardier complex isn't simply another shuttered factory. For many Auburnians, it is deeply personal," Auburn Mayor Jimmy Giannettino said. "It is a reminder of a much different time, and many of us have memories of family members who worked and lived in that neighborhood."
"Giannettino added, "Nearly 20 years after its closure, there is now real possibility for a new beginning and a brighter future for this site and for the 'west end' of Auburn. Commercial Development Company has a proven track record and I want to personally thank them for choosing to invest in Auburn."聽
In its news release announcing the acquisition, Commercial Development Co. highlights the property's location and attributes. The firm believes it will "attract users from multiple sectors."
One possibility is the complex could be used by a supply-chain company linked to the Micron project in neighboring Onondaga County. Micron is building a massive manufacturing facility in the town of Clay that is expected to create 9,000 jobs and 40,000 more in supporting industries.
