An Auburn man was arrested last week as a result of a sexual assault investigation that began in October.
In a news release Thursday, the Auburn Police Department said that Charles Shaffer, 59, was charged July 1 with first-degree sexual abuse. The charge followed an investigation that began when officers responded to a residence on Owasco Street at about 1:45 a.m. Oct. 19. Using DNA analysis, detectives determined Shaffer sexually assaulted a female victim at the residence, police said.
An indictment warrant was issued for Shaffer at the conclusion of the investigation. He was arrested in the city by members of the department's Gun Involved Violence Elimination unit, which also includes members of the Cayuga County Probation Department, New York State Division of Parole and Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.
Shaffer was processed at police headquarters and transported to the Cayuga County Jail, where he was held pending arraignment in Cayuga County Court due to the nature of the charge.聽
