New York State Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place Monday evening in southern Cayuga County.
In , state police said troopers from the Auburn station responded at about 5 p.m. to a report of a crash on Route 90 in the town of Summerhill.Â
A preliminary investigation determined a 2017 Chevrolet 2500 HD pickup truck driven by a 51-year-old man was traveling eastbound when it lost control, exited the roadway's north side and overturned. The man, whom police did not identify, was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck's passenger, Lawanda H. Eaton, 47, of Cortland, had no apparent injuries, state police said. She was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she is in stable condition.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, state police said. Its Collision Reconstruction Unit processed the scene.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office and Locke Fire Department were also at the scene, state police said.
Preliminary tests are raising concerns that the nation’s roadside guardrails are no match for new heavy electric vehicles. The University of Nebraska safety research facility and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crashed a 4-ton EV pickup into a conventional guardrail at 60 mph–which did little to slow it down. #electricvehicle #automobile
