The Auburn City Council will vote on Thursday to award the contract for an intersection widening project at North Street and Standart Avenue.
Casinella Excavating, a firm based in Warners, Onondaga County, was the lowest bidder with a bid of $509,264.34. There were three other bidders: Paul F. Vitale Inc. in Sennett ($520,123.66), Davis Wallbridge Inc. in East Syracuse ($557,800) and Villager Construction Inc. in Fairport ($701,250).
C&S Companies, an engineering firm that is managing the intersection widening project, analyzed the bids. C&S found that Casinella is a responsible bidder and that while its bid was 14% lower than the projected cost of $593,490, it "does not find any irregularities with the apparent low bidder's unit costs that should preclude the award."
"Therefore, based on the bid analysis performed and our evaluation of bidder responsibility, C&S concurs with awarding the contract to Casinella Excavating, LLC in the amount of $509,264.34," C&S said.
The goal of the project is to increase the turning radius at the intersection of North Street and Standart Avenue. Other improvements include asphalt resurfacing, curb and sidewalk replacement, drainage, pavement markings, traffic signal modifications and upgraded signage.
According to state Department of Transportation data, the average annual daily traffic along that stretch of North Street was 10,487 vehicles in 2023. Traffic on Standart Avenue totaled 7,506 vehicles that year.聽
The project is part of the city's road program. It will be funded by the state Touring Route Program, which assists municipalities with road maintenance projects.
The widening of the intersection could complement another nearby project. Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services, a nonprofit, is planning to invest $24 million to build a 50-unit apartment building at 197 North St. The lot, which is the former home of a car wash, is located at the intersection of North Street and Standart Avenue.
When the Auburn Planning Board reviewed the site plan application, residents expressed concern about the traffic in the area. The board approved the application in June.
