Judge Blocks Trump's Limit On Birthright Citizenship

A federal judge has again blocked President Donald Trump鈥檚 executive order limiting birthright citizenship, despite a recent Supreme Court decision restricting nationwide injunctions. Judge Joseph Laplante in Concord, New Hampshire, ruled that the plaintiffs, including immigrant rights groups, could proceed as a class, enabling him to halt the policy across the country. He emphasized that denying children citizenship would cause 鈥渋rreparable harm,鈥 calling citizenship 鈥渢he greatest privilege that exists in the world鈥. Trump鈥檚 order, issued in January, seeks to deny citizenship to babies born in the US unless at least one parent is a citizen or lawful permanent resident. The Justice Department argued the policy aligns with the Constitution and opposed class certification. However, Laplante said the injunction was necessary to prevent children from being unjustly stripped of their rights. More than 150,000 newborns annually could be affected if the policy were enforced nationwide. The judge plans to issue a written decision shortly and allowed a brief stay for the administration to appeal.
