Centro, which provides bus service in Cayuga, Cortland, Oneida, Onondaga and Oswego counties, conducted a nationwide search, but did not have to look far for its new leader.
The authority's board of directors has named Christopher Tuff as CEO. Tuff, who previously served as deputy CEO, has been overseeing day-to-day operations since former CEO Brian Schultz's departure in January 2024.
Centro launched a search for a new CEO. That process, led by TransPro Consulting, narrowed the pool of candidates to nine.
"When we began our search for a new CEO, the board of members promised to find a leader who exemplifies the organization's values and appreciates the importance of public transportation in a service area like ours," said Nicholas Laino, chairman of the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority's board.聽
Laino continued, "We have someone who has demonstrated his ability to lead this organization with accountability and transparency. Someone who lives the values Centro prioritizes. Someone who is ready to transform central New York's transportation landscape through the arrival of Micron and removal of Interstate 81. That leader is Christopher Tuff."
Christopher Tuff has been named CEO of Centro.

Tuff has been named CEO during his second stint with Centro. He was hired in 2007 for a job in the authority's accounting department. After working as an auditor with the state Department of Taxation and Finance, he returned to Centro in 2016. He has held other positions within the agency, including director of operations, director of subsidiary operations and vice president of administration.
In 2017, Tuff obtained his commercial driver's license, which allowed him to add another title: bus operator. With Centro facing a bus operator shortage, he has driven buses for special events. He was one of the drivers for the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the JMA Wireless Dome in April 2023.
Tuff is involved with transit organizations, including the American Public Transportation Association and the New York Public Transportation Association. Mass Transit Magazine named him to its "Top 40 Under 40" list in 2022.
"Christopher has what it takes to lead Centro and execute the authority's forward-looking policies," Laino said. "He gets what makes our drivers come to work every day and why riders choose Centro."
