With Monday's total solar eclipse on the horizon, finding a hotel in Auburn or the surrounding area this weekend will prove difficult.Â
Ë®¹ûÅÉAV has found that most rooms are already booked in the northern half of Cayuga County, which will experience totality — or the moon's shadow fully covering the sun — during the Monday afternoon eclipse. It will be the first total solar eclipse to touch the county since 1925, making it a once-in-a-lifetime event for most.
One of the northernmost points of the county, Fair Haven, will experience the longest duration of totality (three minutes, 25 seconds). As a result, the vast majority of stays in the village area were booked by last month. The campgrounds at Fair Haven Beach State Park, which will open early Monday and host events all day, also filled up fast.
In Auburn, major hotels the Holiday Inn on North Street and the Hilton Garden Inn on State Street still have limited availability Saturday. The Holiday Inn does as well on Sunday and Monday, while the Hilton is fully booked those days. The Inn at the Finger Lakes on Seminary Avenue, meanwhile, is booked solid Sunday and has limited availability Saturday and Monday.
Also mostly booked are the Springside Inn in Fleming and Skaneateles Suites in Sennett, though they noted that spring can be a busy time for hotels in the area under normal circumstances. The Springside is fully booked Sunday but has limited availability the surrounding days, while Skaneateles Suites is fully booked the whole weekend.
The same goes for Weedsport's Rodeway Inn and Red Roof Inn, which are booked solid Sunday and Monday and have limited availability Friday and Saturday.Â
Local hotel representatives who spoke to Ë®¹ûÅÉAV suggested that those seeking rooms to call regularly in case of last-minute cancellations.
But unless eclipse chasers have a local connection with family or friends, they may have to turn to a short-term rental on online marketplaces like Airbnb.
According to a February report, searches for short-term rentals along the path of totality 1,000%.
