The Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education began the new school year at its Wednesday meeting by selecting a new president and welcoming some new faces.
The board voted Dr. Eliezer "Eli" Hern谩ndez its new president, 5-4, replacing Ian Phillips. He's served on the board since 2011 and has previously served as its vice president.
"I'm excited to be a part of this big transition,"聽Hern谩ndez told 水果派AV.
Danielle Wood will continue to serve as the board's vice president.
The board on Wednesday also swore in new members聽Melissa Deyneka and Noel Romeo, who were elected in May, as well as reelected incumbent Matteo Bartolotta.聽
Phillips, who is running for state Assembly, stepped down from the board along with Salvatore "Sam" Giangreco, who served five terms.
Also sworn in on Wednesday, for the final time, was Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo, who聽will retire聽Jan. 5, 2025. He will be succeeded by Dr. Misty Slavic, who was selected by the board in June.
"Having a new superintendent, especially that's new to the state, I'm here to support her and the board,"聽Hern谩ndez said. "We are committed to success and can really move the district forward."
Hern谩ndez said some of the issues he hopes to address as president of the board include cellphone use in Auburn schools, fights and graduation rates.
Such issues can't be fixed overnight, he said, and will take collective action from the board and administrators.聽
The meeting, which also saw Lisa Camardo sworn in again as district treasurer, was "very efficient," Pirozzolo told 水果派AV. Board committees will be set up at its next meeting, he continued.聽
