After months of searching, the Auburn Enlarged City School District has selected its next superintendent.
The district board of education announced in a news release Tuesday that it has chosen Dr. Misty Slavic for the position.
Pending contract negotiations, Slavic will be formally appointed at a special school board meeting, the district said. She is expected to assume her responsibilities Sept. 1.
The current superintendent, Jeff Pirozzolo, who has been in the role since 2015, previously听announced听he will retire on Jan. 5, 2025. Auburn school board President Ian Phillips told 水果派AV that once Slavic becomes superintendent in September, Pirozzolo will take on a deputy superintendent position, where he will focus on capital projects and other needs, until his retirement.

"We are excited to bring Dr. Slavic on board as our next superintendent," Phillips said in the release.
"Her extensive experience and innovative vision make her a great choice for our district. We believe her student-centered approach and commitment to collaboration will greatly benefit our educators and students. Dr. Slavic's leadership will undoubtedly strengthen our school community, add to our strong existing team, and positively impact the Auburn area as a whole."

Slavic was superintendent of the Kiski Area School District in Pennsylvania from September 2021 to April 2024, according to her LinkedIn page. The Valley News Dispatch that she resigned due to a job offer her husband received in New York. She has a doctorate in education and educational leadership from the University of Pittsburgh.
Her experience includes serving as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and director of special education roles, the Auburn district said. She has created partnerships with local businesses for job training and internship opportunities for students, and established neighborhood advisory committees to give community members a voice in educational decisions.
"Throughout my career, I have been committed to fostering strong relationships and partnerships within diverse communities," Slavic said.
"My leadership experience in K-12 public schools has provided me with a deep understanding of the complexities of community engagement. In my previous roles, I have successfully developed and implemented strategies to enhance community outreach, increase participation, and promote inclusivity."
Almost 20 people applied for the superintendent job, but through an听interview process听the board narrowed the candidates down to five. The search came down to Slavic and Dr. Tanya Wilson-Thevanesan, a deputy superintendent for the Fairport Central School District in Monroe County. Each finalist spent a day in the district for their final interviews this spring.
