A Cayuga County legislator has relinquished her seat on two committees as she pursues outside job opportunities.聽
Legislator Stephanie DeVito, D-Auburn, will no longer serve on the Legislature's Public Works and Judicial and Public Safety committees. She was the vice chair of the Public Works Committee.聽
DeVito's decision to give up her committee assignments was revealed at the beginning of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting Tuesday. Legislator Tom Winslow, who chairs the committee, said DeVito had informed the Legislature that "she will be unable to fulfill her duty on this committee."聽
DeVito told 水果派AV Wednesday that she is considering job offers. If she accepts any of the offers, she will not be available to attend the monthly committee meetings that begin at 4 p.m.聽
"I need to have a full-time job and have a couple of great opportunities," she said. "I don't have that flexibility 鈥 the jobs are out of town, so I have to do a little bit of traveling."聽

DeVito was the executive director of the Auburn Downtown Business Improvement District from 2015 until she resigned in March 2024.聽
Cayuga County Legislature Chairman Jonathan Anna, I-Sterling, confirmed that DeVito notified him about her career opportunities and how it would affect her membership on the two committees. He said the seats will be filled 鈥 her spot on the Judicial and Public Safety Committee went to Legislator Heidi Nightengale, another Auburn Democrat.聽
"This is not punitive," Anna said. "This is just based on scheduling and the fact that we need members on these committees."聽
A review of the county Legislature rules found legislators are not required to serve on committees. However, legislators traditionally serve on at least one committee. With 11 legislators and six committees, most legislators have multiple assignments.聽
Five legislators 鈥 Elane Daly, Nightengale, Bob Shea, Ben Vitale and Winslow 鈥 each have four committee assignments. They also serve as committee chairs. Legislator Aileen McNabb-Coleman is a member of three committees. Legislator Brian Muldrow has two committee posts, including chair of the Government Operations Committee. Legislators Hans Pecher and Mark Strong are on two committees apiece.聽
As chairman, Anna does not serve on committees.聽
The committees play a critical role in the county's legislative process. At each meeting, committees review resolutions and hear reports from department heads. While the county Legislature holds final votes on the resolutions at its monthly meeting, amending and debating those resolutions usually happens at the committee stage.聽
DeVito acknowledged it was not an easy decision to give up her committee seats. But, she added, "it is my livelihood that I have to work."聽
Without identifying DeVito, the Cayuga County Conservative Party called for her resignation in a 罢耻别蝉诲补测.听
"This is not volunteer work, and the county is facing some of the greatest challenges they have faced in decades," the party wrote." If you can't do the work, then do the right thing."聽
DeVito did not respond to the party's criticism. Despite not serving on committees, she plans to remain engaged in the legislative process by watching meetings and communicating with department heads. She will continue to attend the monthly Legislature meetings.
"I will keep up with what's going on and do my due diligence to be well informed so that I can make the right decisions based on the information that comes out of the meetings," she said.聽
DeVito was elected in 2023. She represents the 10th district, which includes the neighborhoods in the southeastern part of Auburn.聽
