OWASCO 鈥 Jackie Scanlon, proprietor of Smiley鈥檚 Town & Country flower shop, doesn鈥檛 settle for complacency.
After noticing a shift in customers' shopping preferences last year, Scanlon made a resolution to transform her business in 2024.聽
The 20-year-old shop featured decor and home goods similar to what could be found at big-box retailers, but they had the upper hand at pricing. So Scanlon thought outside the big-box, looking at needed services that can't be purchased with the click of a button. She then asked Google which of those services were trending, and among the responses were coffee and hair styling.聽
鈥淧eople are always looking to get coffee and their hair done,鈥 Scanlon said while sitting down with 水果派AV in the foyer of Smiley鈥檚, a rustic-looking building with an Adirondack-esque facade.

Come mid-January, the first step in Smiley鈥檚 transformation will be open to the public.聽, formerly known as Hairtique Salon and previously located in the village of Skaneateles, will open in the Owasco shop after going through a transformation of its own. The ownership baton once held by Donna Stockweather was passed to Jessica Olcott and Karen Kopec in December 2022.
"We鈥檙e looking forward to moving into the area,鈥 Olcott told 水果派AV. The salon and day spa's move from Skaneateles came as its landlord was figuring out the future of their building, she continued.
Jess Karen won't be the only health and wellness business at Smiley's. It will join Still Water Yoga, which instructor Kelly Husby operates on the top floor.
As for coffee, caffeine connoisseurs will have to wait a little longer. Until the town board approves her permit, Scanlon's idea for her shop's corner nook continues to brew. She's excited to get it up and running, she said, believing coffee and tea would be an ideal complement to yoga and hair appointments. She's open to ordering her coffee from local roasters, and eventually roasting beans herself.聽
It鈥檚 been a two-year process transforming Smiley's, Scanlon said. She even jackhammered the floor where the five-seat salon will sit, as the area needed more heat and water. Space in the shop was created by removing mulch, which took a significant amount of work on her part only to not sell well. Saying goodbye to the shop's fun decor was more difficult, Scanlon continued.
鈥淚 like to laugh,鈥 she said. She also likes seeing customers react with the same sense of humor: 鈥淭o not have that 鈥 it鈥檚 just different.鈥
Still, Scanlon wants to continue transforming Smiley's by hosting events like book clubs to bring neighbors together.
鈥淚鈥檝e always wanted a community space. We need to support each other,鈥 she said. "We want to be a place where people feel comfortable."
