A public sculpture will be unveiled in downtown Auburn on Friday, June 14.
At 6 p.m. at the corner of Genesee and South streets, "Ideogenesis" by Unite Two Design architect Jon Carnes and owner/fabricator Keith Traub will be unveiled. The sculpture is a pair of hands with a "sun-spark-gear shape" between them, the Auburn Downtown Business Improvement District said in a news release, with the tallest finger stretching 15 feet high.
The sculpture has a theme of "creation and ingenuity," the district continued, and "will make a huge visual impact on the urban landscape in the very heart of downtown Auburn."
The sculpture was selected after a call for qualifications by the city's Public Art Commission that received more than 50 proposals. It consists of more than 3,000 pounds of stainless steel, valued at approximately $10,000, donated by Nucor Steel. The sculpture cost about $30,000 and was supported by the $285,000 public art portion of the city's $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant.

Also supported by the grant, and being unveiled at a later date at the corner of William and Lincoln streets, is "Sky Woman" by Audrey Iwanicki.聽
(Editor's note: The sculpture's unveiling was originally scheduled to follow that of "Ideogenesis," but has been postponed.)
A life-sized bronze female figure, the sculpture honors the legacy of the Cayuga Nation and Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the district said. Three concentric rings the figure holds, which will turn in the wind like a gyroscope, represent the sun, earth and sky. Sculptor Dexter Benedit of Fire Works Foundry cast the bronze and Charlie Masters of Auburn Tank fabricated the rings.聽
The sculpture also includes a bronze base depicting the back of a tortoise shell and a descriptive plaque on one of the many boulders that surround the sculpture, which will be lit. Lake Life Laser Studio provided the plaque design and installation. Landscape and site work on the sculpture and "Ideogenesis" was provided by Wayside Contractors, and Rick Evans Rigging provided transportation.

"Sky Woman," which cost $68,750, was designed and cast more than 10 years ago with funding from the Stardust Foundation of CNY. Former Executive Director Guy Cosentino will speak at the unveiling.
The sculpture will "greatly enhance and complement its neighbors," the district said, including the Equal Rights Heritage Center, Westminster Presbyterian Church and the parking garage. The sculpture also joins the bronze Harriet Tubman one in the center's courtyard and Iwanicki's own "Wheel to Reel" on Exchange Street and "Harriet Tubman: Life Cycle of a Freedom Fighter" in Freedom Park.
Following the unveiling will be the city's Music on the Mall concert series on State Street, featuring the Frank White Experience, from 7 to 10 p.m.聽
