When 鈥淭he Handmaid鈥檚 Tale鈥 was adapted for a television series, Executive Producer Bruce Miller spotted something more than acting ability in Elisabeth Moss.
鈥淚t was the way she played June to the camera,鈥 Miller says. 鈥淪he made you feel like you were seeing this show through her eyes so 鈥 she was basically directing it anyway.鈥
Executive Producer Bruce Miller recognized Elisabeth Moss's talent as director early on. As a result, she was in front of the camera and behind it on 10 episode of "The Handmaid's Tale."
Over the course of seven seasons, Moss聽鈥 who plays June, the rebellious handmaid in the dystopian story 鈥 directed 10 episodes and worked with Miller to craft each season.
鈥淭here鈥檚 more things she鈥檚 doing that she鈥檚 not credited for,鈥 says Josh Charles, an actor who joined the final season. 鈥淗er involvement has been incredible to watch. She鈥檚 a true renaissance person. What it鈥檚 done is it鈥檚 created a very safe environment creatively and structurally. On a very basic level, the production runs very smoothly and she鈥檚 a huge part why.鈥

The 鈥淢oss appeal鈥 of 鈥淗andmaid鈥檚 Tale鈥 goes back to 2017 when Moss, a star of 鈥淢ad Men,鈥 was cast as June Osborne, a woman who was assigned to a Gileadan commander to provide him with a child. The system emerged after fertility rates collapsed and the new totalitarian government forced fertile women to be handmaids.
Because she could telegraph so much just through her eyes, as Miller says, Moss was able to convey what author Margaret Atwood captured in her best-selling novel. The series clicked immediately and became the first streaming series to win the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy. Moss won Best Actress that first year, too, and because she was one of the series鈥 executive producers, got a second for the series win.
Like Brewer, co-star Max Minghella saw Moss, Bradley Whitford and others as role models. 鈥淚 felt like a student coming to this set,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t really keeps you on your toes.鈥

While Miller is preparing 鈥淭he Testaments,鈥 the 鈥淗andmaid鈥檚鈥 sequel as his next series, he realized he didn鈥檛 need to check boxes while wrapping up 鈥淗andmaid鈥檚 Tale.鈥
鈥淵ou sit down with a million ideas,鈥 he says, 鈥渂ut the best thing you can do is throw them out and just look at the characters. What would happen next? What interesting thing happens in these people鈥檚 lives that I would want to see? Fortunately, the next time she opens her eyes, June is something interesting.鈥
Miller says he followed Atwood鈥檚 lead when writing the final season. 鈥淭he reason the 鈥楬andmaid鈥 style is so lasting is that the end of it is just like the beginning. Things happen to June when they happen to June.鈥
As in the beginning, the final season has moments when women, clad in those striking red robes are assembled in large gathering places. Charles calls it 鈥渃inematic.鈥 Brewer agrees.
鈥淲hen you see the swarm of red robes, it鈥檚 truly a surreal thing because it鈥檚 so cinematic,鈥 says Brewer. 鈥淭o be part of the world is strange.鈥
Amanda Brugel, who plays one of June鈥檚 allies, says she felt 鈥渁t home鈥 every year a season started.

And now, Brewer adds, 鈥渋n a few months, we鈥檒l be like, 鈥榃hy am I not going back to hang out with my buddies?鈥欌
While the series served as a cautionary tale for many, it didn鈥檛 land at a time when it was needed most, Brugel says. 鈥淲e needed this show 100 years ago. I鈥檓 just glad there are enough people and enough television sets so that more people get to see it and can be inspired.鈥
Where it ends 鈥 and where 鈥淭estaments鈥 starts 鈥 depends largely on the viewer, Miller says.
鈥淵ou can spoon feed all you want if the curiosity is coming from the characters,鈥 Miller says. 鈥淏ut I like the fact that when you get to the end you still have stuff to think about.鈥

For Miller, the difficult part of saying goodbye is ending the collaboration with the actors and others. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e really working together to make a character. That鈥檚 what you miss 鈥 that collaboration, creating this third thing.鈥
Putting the final touches on the last episode, Miller and Moss realized they were doing that they had done with other episodes 鈥 鈥渕oving little things around, trying to make it work better. And you realize the overwhelming thing is not looking back but stopping.鈥
