If you think twice before you have dinner with relatives, you鈥檙e going to love 鈥淒inner with the Parents.鈥
Hitting on all those things that annoy you about the in-laws and the outlaws, the new Amazon Freevee comedy offers more to unpack than an order from UberEats.
For starters, there鈥檚 the聽rivalry between brothers David (Henry Hall) and Gregg (Daniel Thrasher). The younger (Gregg) constantly wants to thwart the older (and he succeeds).

From left, Daniel Thrasher as Gregg Langer, Carol Kane as Nana, Michaela Watkins as Jane Langer, Henry Hall as David Langer in "Dinner With The Parents."聽
Then, there鈥檚 the聽sisterly tension between Jane (Michaela Watkins) and her influencer sibling Amy (Mircea Monroe). Their mother (Carol Kane), you鈥檇 think, would mediate but she picks a side and only adds to the angst.
When friends come to visit? It鈥檚 even more hectic. And that鈥檚 what makes this gathering sorta fun. You wouldn鈥檛 think you鈥檇 find common ground but when the insults fly, it鈥檚 somehow comforting to know you鈥檙e not alone (or you鈥檙e better off than they are). Because the series鈥 title limits the scope, 鈥淒inner鈥 could seem confining. Creator Jon Beckerman, however, cracks the door to others and gets plenty of outsiders in the fold.

Dan Bakkedahl, as patriarch Harvey, isn鈥檛 afraid to pull those folks in. He鈥檚 in a cover band (the Spin Dentists), loves to do impressions and isn鈥檛 afraid to share what he thinks about the in-laws.
Jane, however, wants to make nice with everyone 鈥 even though she resents the intrusion. When her mother presses a little too hard, she cranks up the massage chair and lets the fake fur fly.
Watkins and Bakkedahl have been in family-oriented series before but here they鈥檙e more outrageous and shameless about the laughs. Many land.
In the pilot, David says he鈥檚 bringing聽home a girlfriend, which ups the ante for everyone. Gregg thinks it鈥檚 a ruse; mom and dad are ready to impress. When the girl gets cold feet, David has to improvise and soon everyone is building onto the house of lies.
Hall is great as the butt of his brother鈥檚 jokes; Thrasher is equally good as the kid you love to hate. While they may not mesh outside the environment, they鈥檙e perfect here.
Kane鈥檚 accent (does she always have an accent now?) is often a hurdle but she accompanies it with a number of visuals. Think: Cloris Leachman and you鈥檒l get the picture.

Dad (Dan Bakkedahl) doesn't see the irony in a gag gift in "Dinner with the Parents."
While 鈥淒inner with the Parents鈥 doesn鈥檛 seem like it will last 10 years, it could surprise in ways we haven鈥檛 imagined. As long as the entr茅e is good, you can serve it every time guests come over. Once you land on a dud, you may be doubling down on the dessert.
It鈥檚 just that simple.
More adult than most sitcoms, 鈥淒inner with the Parents鈥 airs on Amazon Freevee.
