US President Donald Trump is facing mounting criticism from his 鈥淢ake America Great Again鈥 supporters over the US and Israel鈥檚 decision to start a war with Iran.聽 The backlash appears to stem from the reversal of his promise to keep the US out of 鈥渇orever wars,鈥 as concerns grow about prolonged conflict and unclear mission objectives.聽 A core element of Trump鈥檚 presidential campaigns was his condemnation of the US鈥檚 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, describing the former as a 鈥渄isaster.鈥 In 2012 and 2013, Trump repeatedly insinuated that then-President Barack Obama would wage a war with Iran, which he did not, to divert attention from his supposed leadership flaws.聽 MAGA backlash comes amid rising energy prices and casualties in the Middle East as the war, which has thus far killed 6 US servicemen, rages on.聽 On Steve Bannon鈥檚 鈥淲ar Room鈥 podcast, longtime Trump supporter Erik Prince voiced his dissent with Trump鈥檚 actions, saying that they do not align with his 鈥淢AGA commitment.鈥澛 鈥淚鈥檓 not happy about the whole thing. I don鈥檛 think this was in America鈥檚 interests. It鈥檚 gonna uncork a significant can of worms and chaos, and destruction in Iran now,鈥 Prince said.聽 Trump, however, appeared to dismiss his allies鈥 concerns, telling journalist Rachael Bade that 鈥淢AGA loves what I鈥檓 doing 鈥 every aspect of it.鈥澛 He characterized the intervention in Iran as 鈥渁 detour that we have to take in order to keep our country safe and other countries safe.鈥澛犅
For Trump, some of the sharpest criticism he's faced in the early days of the Iran war has come from once-loyal media figures far more accustomed to singing his praises.
