Harold E. 'Gene' Powell, 91, of Port Byron, passed away peacefully Monday evening, June 2, 2025, at The Commons on Saint Anthony.
He was born near Hancock, Maryland, the son of Martin L. And Cora B. (Beatty) Powell, and moved to this area at an early age, where he resided for the remainder of his life. 'Gene' as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was an Army veteran serving our country honorably during the Korean War. He previously was employed for more than 33 years at Sylvania in Seneca Falls as a television tube tester specialist, working in quality control. Gene also worked for more than 17 years at the former Mercy Rehabilitation Center. He was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan, seldom ever missing a game. Gene had a strong Christian faith and was a lifetime member of the Sunnyside Baptist Church near North Rose.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara (Demmon) Powell of Port Byron; two children, son Michael (Karen) Powell of Virginia, daughter Lauri (Michael) Barnes of Port Byron; four grandchildren, Erica L. (Henry) Adkins, Erin M. (Nathan) Kliniske, Jacob C. DeChick, Kaitlin A. DeChick; nine great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emyah, Elijah, Eizac, Evyn, Parker, Rowan, Ivy, Isabel; sister-in-law, Amy (James) Warrington; brother-in-law, Ben (Teresa) Demmon; sister-in-law, Patricia Smith; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Gene was also predeceased by all of his 13 siblings.
Calling hours are this Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., with his services to immediately follow at 6 p.m., all at Pettigrass Funeral Home, 196 Genesee St., Auburn. Burial will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
