A former inmate at Auburn Correctional Facility admitted to threatening to kill two New York state judges in a letter he wrote to Gov. Kathy Hochul.Â
Christopher McCarty, 33, of Manhattan, pleaded guilty Tuesday to mailing threatening communications, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Syracuse.Â
According to the criminal complaint, McCarty was convicted of third-degree robbery in the Bronx in 2021. He was sentenced to two to four years in state prison. He was committed to Auburn Correctional Facility.Â
While imprisoned at Auburn Correctional Facility, McCarty wrote a letter to Hochul in May 2023. In the letter, he threatened to kill two judges who presided over the robbery case.Â
In the letter, McCarty told Hochul that he was "writing this letter to you so when I go home and I killed them at least you can say that I gave a warning plain and simple..."
A state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision investigator interviewed McCarty at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in July 2023. During the interview, McCarty confirmed he wrote the letter. According to the investigator, he said "if given the opportunity to kill the judges, he would do it."
McCarthy, who will be sentenced June 10, faces up to five years in federal prison and up to three years of post-release supervision. He could also be fined up to $250,000.
