Owasco Lake restaurant's new operator hopes to make splash where many sank
A familiar restaurant on Owasco Lake is heading for uncharted waters in hopes of avoiding the fate met by many of its predecessors.
The Lakeside Grill at 2846 Fire Lane 1 in the town of Venice, most recently聽Charlie's Lakeside, is moving away from sit-down dining and toward special and ticketed events.
Bimbo Bakeries has notified its employees that it will close its Auburn facility, one of three bakeries the company will shut down in the next few months.聽
In a statement, Bimbo Bakeries said it will close two New York bakeries 鈥 Auburn and Olean 鈥 and its facility in San Antonio, Texas. The closure will affect 49 employees in Auburn and 82 in Olean, according to a worker adjustment and retraining notification filed with the state Department of Labor.聽
Former Cayuga County elementary school to become 47 apartments
The E. John Gavras Center has released an update on its plan to redevelop the former Cayuga Elementary School into housing.
In a Monday news release, the Auburn center announced that Wheat Street Apartments will consist of 47 affordable housing units for low- and moderate-income individuals and families. Located in the former school at 255 Wheat St. in the village of Cayuga, the development meets the New York state housing policy goal of serving large families in a high-performing school district, the center said.
Sheriff: Auburn man charged with DWI after crashing into Bass Pro pond
An Auburn man was charged with DWI on Saturday after allegedly crashing his truck into the pond at Bass Pro Shops in Aurelius.
Members of the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in the area of Fingerlakes Mall at about 11 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff Brian Schenck said in a news release. Upon arrival, deputies found that a black Ford F-250 pickup truck had crashed into the fishing pond in front of Bass Pro, and was sinking.

Chris Emmons has been charged with third- and fourth-degree grand larceny, first-degree falsifying business records and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Emmons' father, Carl Sr., was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny. They were arraigned in Oswego County Court.聽

Auburn awards contract for sidewalk work 鈥 and adds to it
To maximize federal funding, the Auburn City Council on Thursday awarded a contract and approved a change order for a sidewalk replacement project.聽
DiGeorge Construction Services, a contractor based in Madison County, was the lone bidder for the work to replace the sidewalks on Owasco Street, from East Genesee Street to Lake Avenue, and South Fulton Street, between East Genesee and Owasco streets.聽
Harmful algal blooms confirmed on Cayuga, Owasco lakes; two bathing beaches closed
The Cayuga County Health Department has closed two bathing beaches after harmful algal blooms have been confirmed on Cayuga and Owasco lakes.聽
The beaches at Camp Y-Owasco and Owasco Yacht Club are closed due to the hazard. The health department will collect samples from the swimming area when the harmful algal blooms are no longer visible, according to a news release.聽
