"Upon arriving on Wheeler (Street), officers were met with gunfire that appeared to be coming from the residence," the APD said in a press release. "Officers were forced to return fire as they were establishing a perimeter around the location."

A massive law enforcement response then followed, with police attempting to establish contact with anyone inside the residence, which is part of a two-unit duplex. Several hours later, police entered the home.

"A single occupant was found in the residence and confirmed to be deceased," according to the press release.

Police said they would not be providing any additional information about the deceased person at this point, including their identity. APD Deputy Chief Roger Anthony told Ë®¹ûÅÉAV that the deceased person did appear to have been wounded by gunfire.

In an indication that law enforcement believe the deceased person could have been struck by the return fire from officers who first arrived at the scene, the investigation is being conducted by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office with the New York State Police. In addition, the state Attorney General's Office of Special of Special Investigation has been notified and will conduct an investigation, according to the press release.

Officers swarmed the Auburn neighborhood Tuesday after the initial reports of gunshots being fired from inside a residence on Wheeler Street came in. The APD Emergency Response Team was called to the scene at about 11:35 a.m. and authorities requested that a reverse 911 call be made to some city residences advising people to shelter in place.

Clark Street, which intersects with the dead-end Wheeler Street in the northwestern section of the city, was shut off to traffic between Belmont and Aurelius avenues.

Clark Street reopened around 4 p.m., along with the south end of Wheeler Street, Anthony said. Residents no longer needed to shelter in place, and police said they were not actively looking for any suspects.

Law enforcement had established a perimeter around the two-unit residence, which is near the north end of Wheeler Street.

A large crowd of onlookers had gathered at Clark Street and Aurelius Avenue. Law enforcement response included APD, the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police. A police drone and helicopter were circling the area, as well. Auburn Fire Department also assisted.

Neighbors called in shots-fired complaints around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. When officers responded, the sheriff's office, they encountered gunfire from an upstairs window at 12 Wheeler St. Officers returned fire, and then established a perimeter around the house to secure the scene.

The sheriff's office is involved in the investigation because the incident involved Auburn Police Department gunfire. New York State Police and members of the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations are also working on the investigation, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office is assisting, the sheriff's office said.

Another resident at 12 Wheeler St., Jeffery Meaney, was picked up on an unrelated bench warrant around 2 p.m. Tuesday at the corner of Clark Street and Aurelius Avenue, where police had blocked traffic as part of the established perimeter. But Sheriff Brian Schenck said it does not appear that Meaney had any involvement in the shots-fired incident.

The sheriff's office said an autopsy will be conducted Wednesday by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine exact cause of death.

Schenck said investigators are still trying to determine why shots were being fired from the Wheeler Street residence, and additional information is not being released at this point because the investigation is continuing.

One of the neighbors who called 911 about hearing gunshots is Christopher Anthony, who lives next door to the 10-12 Wheeler St. duplex. In an interview Wednesday, he told Ë®¹ûÅÉAV that he first heard shooting around 11 a.m., but at first didn't think it was gunfire because there are often loud banging noises coming from a nearby industrial site.

But about 15 minutes later, after he heard more of the same kind of noise and thought he heard glass breaking, he went outside to check out the situation. That's when he eventually saw a gun barrel sticking out from an upstairs front window. He placed his 911 call at 11:19 a.m., according to the APD calls for service log.

An officer arrived and came to his door to ask about what he heard and saw, and while they were talking another shot was fired, Anthony said. At that point, Anthony retreated inside and the officer took cover, he said. When additional law enforcement units arrived, the gunfire exchange with police occurred.

Anthony said he never saw any people inside or around the 12 Wheeler St. residence.

Anthony, who has lived on Wheeler Street a little over a year, said Baida was a friendly person. He is trying to process what happened.

"I never expected anything like this to happen at all, ever," he said. "I'm still kind of dumbfounded."

The 69 Wall St. shop is a supreme example of the saying,Ìý"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Lumb told Ë®¹ûÅÉAV.

"I want this to be a homemade, old-fashioned pizza shop," he said. "I want to keep it all the same as it's been for almost 40 years under Bill Gentilcore."

Gentilcore, who bought the tiny stucco shop for $10,000 in 1982, ran it until 2012 and again from 2015 to this year. Then, with retirement on his mind, he began looking for the right person to take it over. He's known Lumb a few years, he told Ë®¹ûÅÉAV, as the two bowl together. Gentilcore is also a member of Lakeview Golf & Country Club in Owasco, where Lumb was once the general manager.

"He's hard-working, motivated and a people person," Gentilcore said. "After dedicating 35 years building that business, I didn't want to turn it over to just anybody. Jeff was the right person."

When Gentilcore offered Lumb the opportunity to buy Mr. Pizza, he wasn't sure at first. He was working as a cook at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, and the security of a state job seemed more appealing. As he continued talking with Gentilcore, though, Lumb began to consider that the prison "just might not be where I want to go for the next 20 years," he said with a laugh.

Once he agreed to buy the shop, Lumb began learning how to make its bread. The distinct recipe, which has been made every morning since Richard Baccari opened Mr. Pizza in 1977, is a major reason for the success of its pizza and subs, Gentilcore said. So he taught Lumb all the secrets, and the new owner said he's still mastering how to roll the dough into consistent sizes every day.

As a condition of the shop's sale, Lumb said, Gentilcore also asked him not to change the bread — or anything else about Mr. Pizza.

When Lumb took over the shop July 7 he honored that request, retaining the menu, the vendors who deliver fresh ingredients daily, and even the employees. The new owner has added to Mr. Pizza, though. First, he introduced a pulled pork sandwich with pineapple barbecue sauce made in-house, as well as a chicken sub with Asiago cheese that's still being taste-tested.

Meanwhile, Lumb has expanded Mr. Pizza's internet presence with a new website and Facebook page. Between that and word of mouth, he said, people have noticed the new ownership at the shop despite the minimum of changes there. Several have stopped in to congratulate him, including Rick Walsh, owner of Rick's Deli on North Seward Avenue, where Lumb worked during college.

Now, Lumb's son Michael has begun helping out at Mr. Pizza as needed, and the new owner hopes the business continues through him and grandchildren Dominic, 9, and Addison, 6.

"The people coming in and saying that 'you're going to do great' — that's rewarding," he said. "It's great to hear people think that we're going to keep this going and make it work."

The exhibit on the second floor of the museum helps tell the story of baseball's modern era. Locastro's spikes are in a display case titled "Today's Game" with a who's who of baseball stars. Next to his spikes are spikes worn by Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Angels designated hitter and pitcher, at the All-Star Game in July. There is also a hat worn by one of Locastro's former teammates, Madison Bumgarner, when he tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in April. 

Jon Shestakofsky, vice president of communications and education at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, told Ë®¹ûÅÉAV on Monday that the hall contacted the Arizona Diamondbacks during Locastro's pursuit of the record to express interest in documenting the story. 

"They were ready to immediately make sure that artifacts from that moment were preserved," Shestakofsky said. 

Locastro broke the record held by Hall of Famer Tim Raines when he stole second base during the Diamondbacks' game against the Cincinnati Reds on April 10. It was Locastro's 28th consecutive stolen base to begin his career. 

After the game, Locastro, who now plays for the New York Yankees,Ìýdonated the spikes to the Baseball Hall of Fame. 

It took time — nearly five months after Locastro achieved the feat — for the spikes to be displayed for hall visitors to see. Shestakofsky said the spikes were added to the "Today's Game" case sometime before the induction ceremony on Sept. 8.

The display is an example of the Baseball Hall of Fame's great relationship with Major League Baseball and the 30 clubs, according to Shestakofsky. The average team, he said, will receive one or two requests per year from the hall "where something historic might be happening that's worthy of collection." 

The approach used prior to Locastro's record is similar for major milestones, such as Miguel Cabrera's 500th career home run. Other events, such as no-hitters or a four-home run game, are less predictable, but hall officials have conversations with teams to relay their interest in obtaining a piece of baseball history. 

"We like to say history happens on the field every day," Shestakofsky said. "Whether it's something that makes it on ESPN and 'SportsCenter' or otherwise, there's always something to pay attention to and be aware of." 

Now that the spikes are on display, the Baseball Hall of Fame could get a few more visitors from the Auburn area. It is a two-hour drive from Auburn to Cooperstown. 

After setting the major league record in April, Locastro told Ë®¹ûÅÉAV that his parents, Tim and Colleen, took him to to the Baseball Hall of Fame when he was a kid. He remembered seeing the plaque gallery, where the Hall of Famers are honored, and the three floors of exhibits. 

He is among those from Auburn who are eager to see his spikes in the Hall of Fame. 

"It will be cool to go there someday and see those," he said. 

If Locastro or anyone else makes the trip to Cooperstown, Shestakofsky said they are ready. 

"We welcome you and would absolutely love to have the local folks see this bit of local baseball history that's made its way back home to Cooperstown," he added. 

It is the second COVID-related death in September and the eighth in the past two months as cases and hospitalizations increase. There were 747 new cases in August and 734 have been reported in September. The health department said there were 54 new cases, 37 of which are unvaccinated, on Monday. 

Most of the county's new cases are unvaccinated. According to the health department, 37 of the 54 cases admitted Monday weren't vaccinated. In September, 512 of the 734 new cases are unvaccinated residents. 

A similar trend has been observed among the hospitalized cases. There are 20 Cayuga County residents being treated for COVID-related illnesses in four area hospitals — Auburn Community, Crouse, St. Joseph's Health and Upstate University. Most of the patients (14 of 20) are unvaccinated. 

The hospitalized residents range in age from one in their 20s to three in their 90s. Five are in their 70s, five are in their 50s, three are in their 60s, two are in their 30s and one is in their 80s. 

Cayuga County is hoping to boost its vaccination rate with a clinic on Wednesday. The clinic will begin at 3 p.m. at Fingerlakes Mall, 1579 Clark St. Road, Aurelius.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 59% of eligible Cayuga County residents ages 12 and older are fully vaccinated. More than 60% of adults ages 18 and older are vaccinated. 

But those numbers lag behind the national averages. The CDC reports that 64.1% of eligible Americans and two-thirds of adults have been fully vaccinated. 

At its clinic, Cayuga County will offer the three approved vaccines — Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer. While Johnson & Johnson and Moderna are for adults ages 18 and older, the Pfizer vaccine is available for individuals ages 12 and older. Children who receive the Pfizer vaccine must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
