Also Saturday morning, local real estate broker Michael DeRosa posted a video on Facebook in which he says he's working with Connelly to sell the mansion. The video then shows footage of what appears to be a ghost hunting team, the Auburn-based Soul Searchers, conducting an investigation on the property. Set to dramatic music, a narrator says, "there's something here."

The video ends with a graphic saying "coming soon." When contacted by 水果派AV, DeRosa declined comment except to say there are "lots of great things in the works," and "stay tuned."

Connelly also declined comment on the paranormal investigation. However, he told 水果派AV that he decided to sell "The Auburn Castle" because he wants to live full time in Georgia, where he ran a chandelier cleaning and restoration business. A native of Scipio, Connelly bought the mansion in 2016 after retiring, in hopes of restoring it as a summer home. He had "a fantasy" his family would move to the area, too, but with his grandchildren still in Georgia, he wants to stay there. He's also beginning an acting career there, he said.

"Without family, it's just a big old house," he said.

The property, which also includes a carriage house, was聽聽at $58,999 in 2019, according to Cayuga County property records. Connelly purchased it for about $40,000 from Virginia Dewey, whose family, the Pastushans, owned it for more than 85 years. Prior to that, the mansion housed a succession of superintendents of the Auburn Woolen Mill. It was built for superintendent Samuel Laurie and designed by architect Nelson Hamblin, whose work in Auburn also includes the Faatz-Crofut Home for the Elderly and the .

Connelly has overseen much restoration work on the 3,400-square-foot Gothic revival mansion, namely replacing its roof and installing electricity. He's also in the middle of restoring its windows. The mansion is "pretty much a blank slate" for its next owner, and Connelly has commissioned an architect to create a floor plan for the three-story structure.

With a that has more than 3,700 followers, "The Auburn Castle" has felt like a community project, Connelly said. He has tried to give tours to anyone who stopped there. And the community has also shared stories and even offered him sinks, pianos and furniture to help restore the mansion to its period glory.

Connelly said he decided now would be a good time to sell given the interest in historic Auburn properties generated by the recent sale of the Seymour mansion at 113 North St. and the 1840 Dulles Inn at 67 South St. DeRosa also worked as the broker on both of those properties. He's working with the Seymour mansion's owner, the city of Auburn, to sell the property to someone who has its best interests in mind. The search process saw more than 200 prospective buyers submit applications. Connelly is taking a similar approach to "The Auburn Castle," he said.

"If I can find someone who has my passion and will do it the right way, I'm going to try to pass the reigns to them," he said. "I want it done right."聽

Marinas were open in Connecticut and New Jersey, but not in New York. Cuomo mentioned this difference during the week. He heard from Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy about New Yorkers traveling to their state to access marinas.聽

With the policy change, the boatyards and marines will be open as long as boaters abide by strict cleaning and social distancing guidelines. Chartered services and rentals won't be allowed.聽

Restaurants at boatyards and marinas may be open for delivery and takeout services, which is consistent with the statewide policy.

"Through this pandemic, we've worked closely with our friends in neighboring states to implement a uniform regional approach to reducing the spread of the virus," Cuomo said in a statement Saturday night. "Aligning our policies in this area is another example of that strong partnership, and will help ensure there is no confusion or 'state shopping' when it comes to marinas and boatyards.聽

The state has eased restrictions on some leisure activities. Earlier in the day, Cuomo announced that golf courses could be open to golfers. Courses can't host gatherings, but employees who provide essential services, such as groundskeeping and security, are allowed on the property.聽

She put her hand over her mouth as people clapped and shouted well-wishes while trying to stay 6 feet away from each other. Andreassen said she didn't know about the gathering in advance and thanked everyone.聽

Sarah Kiefer, who helped create the Healthcare Hero Project, said it's an opportunity to thank medical workers who haven't been able to stay home during the pandemic.

"It's just remarkable that, despite the risks, they're very brave and they're facing this thing head-on, they're completely selfless and they're truly heroic," she said,

Andreassen, who works聽for Hillrom as a patient safety post-market surveillance clinician, but who is also a registered nurse, said she had to use her skills to help. She reached out to the International Medical Corps organization, and is set to spend two weeks working with COVID-19 patients in a Brooklyn hospital. Although her past experience includes working at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, she hasn't done bedside work in a few years. She is confident she will be able to shortly get back into the swing of things.

"Sitting here as a nurse, working from home, really feeling like I'm doing much for the cause, I really had a huge need to want to help," Andreassen said.

She admitted she is nervous, leaving her husband Eric and her three children. Despite that, she felt she had to get involved.

"Those nurses and those health care workers have been doing this for days on end, 12-hour shifts, no days off, not seeing their families, I feel it's the least I can possibly do," she said.

She wants people to take the respiratory illness seriously and to keep in mind that while they may not die, they would be still be quarantined and alone while combating the disease.

"Think about your family members, think about your child, think about even yourself being there, you're going to be there all by yourself," Andreassen said. "Think about your child having to be intubated because they can't breath on their own for a little while. They may not die and they may recover just fine because they have minimal risk factors, but they will be alone."

Andreassen said she was touched by the acknowledgment and the send-off.

"It was wonderful, overwhelming, and I didn't really know quite what to do with it all," she said. "I'm not quite good at being front and center, but it was amazing."

But when she saw that New York had become a hot zone for the worst public health crisis in a century, Clifford knew she had to help out as close to home as she could.

"When you decide to become a nurse, something kind of clicks in you," she said over the phone Tuesday. "We want to be at work, we want to be doing our best and we want to be helping people."

After a conversation with her recruiter, Clifford was on her way to Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, where she's been logging 12-hour night shifts since March 30. She works in a pop-up, 75-bed intensive care unit consisting entirely of patients with coronavirus, or COVID-19.

There's no such thing as a typical night there, Clifford said. Treatment guidelines continue to evolve, supplies are almost exhausted and the virus defies explanation. She's seen patients of all ages and conditions, and the only constant they present has been the speed with which COVID-19 attacks them.

"This virus has no rules," she said. "That is the scariest part. It's like nothing I've seen before aside from cancer."

Clifford doesn't know how many people her hospital has lost to the virus. It's a tough subject, she said, and she knows the number is "not good." But she has a better idea how many people the hospital has sent home, and it's about 270. That's because the number is tracked on a board for everyone to see.

That positive energy, that resolve to lift everyone's spirits, has been another constant during Clifford's time in New Jersey.

She's been able to count on support from not only her hospital, but also her fellow staff. Nurses are often expected to shoulder the burden of their work without showing emotion, Clifford said, but "we absolutely feel everything that's going on." And it helps, even during a pandemic, to be able to share that burden with others.

"When all is said and done, we are in a war zone type of situation. But when you look around and you still see people willing to help and smiling and trying to keep spirits up 鈥� that's what you have to take away in times like this," she said. "What I'm going to remember is the people I'm working with side-by-side in these trenches."

Clifford's bonds with her fellow staff are strengthened by their shared experience. And part of that experience is the extensive routine they follow to protect themselves from exposure to COVID-19.

Clifford has to wear a surgical mask at all times, she said, plus an N95 mask, face shield, hair net and gown around patients. She washes her hands when she enters the hospital, and washes them half a dozen times while removing her protective equipment. The hospital, helpfully, gives her scrubs she returns at the end of her shift for washing, so she goes home in clean clothes. Though she's afraid of catching COVID-19 鈥� anyone who isn't afraid isn't taking the virus seriously enough, she said 鈥� Clifford trusts in her ability to protect herself so long as she has the resources.

The hospital hasn't run out of any of those resources yet, Clifford said. But supplies have gotten low and been fought over. At one point, staff made face shields from sheets of plastic with holes cut in the side for their elastic straps. There have also been shortages of ventilators and IV tubing. And because critical IV medications require nurses bedside, close to the patient at all times, staff had to devise a way to safely extend IV pumps outside a patient's room in order to limit exposure. Such troubleshooting reminded Clifford of her time in Guam, she said.

"It requires pretty critical thinking," she said. "We've gotten creative."

Clifford is on an eight-week crisis contract at Hackensack, she said. She hopes she sees the curve of COVID-19 flatten during that time.

Afterward, she'd like to return to central New York, where her father, Tim Clifford, also works as a nurse, in corrections. She's aware of how much nurses have been held up as heroes during the pandemic, and appreciates the support. But she's just as appreciative of the people in her hometown who are doing their part right now.

"My heroes are the people back home with my family, taking social isolation seriously and keeping them safe," she said. "I thank them as much as they thank me."

Four men 鈥� one in their 50s, one in their 30s and two in their 20s 鈥� and a woman in her 20s tested positive for the virus. The men live outside of Auburn and the woman is a city resident, according to the health department.聽

A few of the new positive cases are linked to previously confirmed cases. No other information was released about the connections to past cases. The health department is conducting contact tracing investigations to determine if any of the positive cases had direct contact with other people who were exposed to COVID-19.聽

Three patients are hospitalized, but it wasn't disclosed whether any of the new positive cases are among those in the hospital. A Cayuga County dairy farmworker has been hospitalized since last week due to the coronavirus.聽

One of the hospitalized patients is in critical condition, according to the health department. Two are in stable condition.聽

The health department has discharged three people who were in mandatory isolation after testing positive for the virus. They recovered from the illness and were released.聽

Ten people remain in mandatory isolation, including the three hospitalized patients. Forty-eight people are in mandatory quarantine, which means they had close contact with a positive case.聽

As of Monday, the county has received 401 COVID-19 test results. Thirteen people tested positive for the virus and 388 were negative.聽

The health department is waiting for the results of 49 tests.聽

With the number of COVID-19 cases growing in Cayuga County, the health department urged residents to continue following social distancing guidelines. The agency also shared guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about wearing a mask or face covering when you're in the grocery and other public settings.聽

The CDC recommended the use of a cloth face covering to slow the spread of the virus.聽

The health department completed contact tracing investigations for five of the seven new cases. No details were provided about the findings.聽

One person is hospitalized. Their condition is unknown.聽

The county has 44 confirmed COVID-19 cases, up from 37 one day ago. There are 23 people in mandatory isolation, which is required for people who test positive for the virus. Another 48 people are in mandatory quarantine. Mandatory quarantine is ordered when someone has direct contact with a positive case.聽

While there are new cases to report, some have recovered from COVID-19. So far, 20 people have been discharged from mandatory isolation in Cayuga County.聽

As of Thursday, the health department has 637 COVID-19 test results 鈥� 44 positives and 593 negatives. They are awaiting the result of 24 tests.聽

Meanwhile in Onondaga County, the health department released test results Wednesday after that showed the first confirmed cases in the town of Elbridge, one of the municipalities that borders Cayuga County to the east. Of the four border towns in Onondaga County, Lysander has the most cases with 18, followed by Skaneateles at 11 and Elbridge and Spafford each with two.

Onondaga County's overall total grew from 563 confirmed COVID-19 cases to 579 on Thursday. The county has reported 17 deaths.

Among the other counties that surround Cayuga, Tompkins has the most confirmed cases with 119 as of Thursday afternoon, followed by Wayne (51), Oswego (50), Cortland (32) and Seneca (29).

Cuddy explained that chronic health conditions may have contributed to the man's death. Older people, those with underlying medical conditions and immunocompromised individuals are at a high risk of serious illness if they contract COVID-19.聽

"This virus does not discriminate," Cuddy said. "It does not matter if you are male or female. It does not matter how old you are or where you live. The virus is throughout our county and has caused the death of one of our own."聽

The man who died is young compared to other victims. According to state Department of Health data, 82.6% of the COVID-19 fatalities in New York are people ages 60 and older. Deaths among those ages 40-49 are less common, with this group accounting for 4.2% of all COVID-19 fatalities statewide.聽

But chronic health conditions have been present in most New Yorkers killed by the virus. More than 86% of fatalities have at least one comorbidity, according to the state health department. High blood pressure and diabetes are among the most common chronic conditions.聽

"We may be seeing the most deaths statistically amongst our older population," Cuddy said. "But clearly this impacts younger people as well."聽

For weeks, the hot spot in New York has been the downstate area. A vast majority of the positive cases and deaths have been reported in New York City and the surrounding suburbs. But there is an increasing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Cayuga County and central New York.聽

One week ago, the county had four confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Now, there are 17 positive cases. Two more confirmed cases 鈥� a man in his 50s and a woman in her 30s, both of whom live outside the city of Auburn 鈥� were announced Wednesday.聽

In counties that surround Cayuga County, Onondaga continued to report the most confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 422 as of Wednesday afternoon, followed by Tompkins (105), Oswego (36), Wayne (35), Cortland (19) and Seneca (12). Onondaga also has released town-level data that shows confirmed cases in towns that border Cayuga: Lysander has 11 cases, Skaneateles has 10 and Spafford has one, while Elbridge continued to have no reported cases of Wednesday afternoon.聽

There are positive metrics showing statewide hospitalization rates and the number of intensive care unit admissions are declining, but there are indications that the outbreak is worsening in upstate New York.聽

Cayuga County Legislature Chairwoman Aileen McNabb-Coleman urged residents to maintain social distancing and stay home as much as possible.聽

"This is not the time to think of ourselves only, especially if you are healthy and not at high risk," she said. "This is a time when we need to think of and protect others."聽

McNabb-Coleman declared a state of emergency in March and took other actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. She signed an emergency order this week to close athletic courts, fields and playgrounds in Cayuga County.聽

There are statewide restrictions in place, including the closure of non-essential businesses and public schools. Conversations are ongoing about whether more limits are needed, McNabb-Coleman said. But she thinks residents need to comply with the existing orders.聽

Cuddy also asked residents to comply with health-related recommendations, such as staying home when you're sick, frequent handwashing and wearing a mask in public. Compliance is "imperative," she said, to protect the community.

The first COVID-19 death is a significant development in the county's response to the disease. Over the last few weeks, Cuddy and McNabb-Coleman highlighted the impediments to testing, including the availability of personal protective equipment and swabs to administer the tests.聽

One week ago, the county had tested 286 people for the coronavirus. As of Wednesday, the number tested jumped to 482.聽

With more testing comes an increase in confirmed cases. Of the 17 cases, five recovered and have been discharged from mandatory isolation. One person remains hospitalized in stable condition. Thirty-three people are in mandatory quarantine after having direct contact with a positive case.聽

Officials have said they are prepared for the pandemic. But that didn't ease the pain of losing someone to the virus in Cayuga County.聽

"Let this be a stark reminder that this virus is real, that it is in our community and it kills," McNabb-Coleman said.聽

Leubner and partner David O'Hara are the owners of Roseadah's, which opened on Mattie Street in Auburn March 27.聽

The restaurant offers simple fare in the farm-to-table style. Burgers are handmade with fresh beef, and never frozen. Pulled pork is seasoned and smoked for seven hours before going in sandwiches. And Leubner cuts, batters and fries her own mozzarella sticks. Though she uses Cabot cheese, which is made in Vermont, most of the milk comes from farms in upstate New York, Leubner said.

She knows that because one of them is her family's: Maple Lane Partnership, a 600-cow dairy farm in Marietta, where Leubner grew up.

"I know how fresh food can be. I'm a little spoiled," she said. "So I'd like to spoil Auburn with some fresh goodness."

Leubner's family also runs a catering service, whose events include the Spafford Fire Department's annual motorcycle raffle. She loves the challenge of feeding 600 people in a few hours, she said.

That experience, along with time spent working at several different restaurants over the years, inspired Leubner to open her own restaurant. In October, she found the space for it at 20 Mattie St., a former ice cream shop in "impeccable shape," she said. The name of the restaurant combines those of her two grandmothers, Rose and Adah.

"I never left my grandmother's hungry, and I want to make sure no one leaves here hungry," she said.

In their honor, Leubner gives everyone who orders dinner a small dessert, the same way her grandmothers would send her out the door with a cookie or cupcake.

That warm, inviting feeling extends to the dining room at Roseadah's, Leubner said, with its wood and rustic home decor. But by the time she and O'Hara had remodeled the space, it was March. And two weeks before their planned opening date of March 27, the coronavirus pandemic led New York state to close all bars and restaurants except for takeout and delivery.聽

"We were like, 'What do we do?'" she said. "And we just said we're going to open anyway."

It's been a struggle, Leubner said, selling a restaurant's food to people who've never set foot inside. That food is also Roseadah's first impression. But when it sits on a counter for several minutes, or has to be reheated, that impression suffers a little, she worries.聽Because of the restaurant's priority on fresh, local ingredients, takeout wasn't supposed to be a big part of the business.

But now, takeout is all of Roseadah's business, and Leubner and O'Hara have adapted accordingly. The building's old ice cream window has become a takeout window, and the restaurant has found many early customers in the Mattie Street neighborhood. Though it's hard to get to know them when they can't sit in her dining room, she appreciates their support.

Leubner also appreciates the support of a few of her fellow Auburn restaurant owners. After Rick Prairie聽of Downtown Deli about Roseadah's chicken riggies and mozzarella sticks on his Facebook page April 15, at least 40 people ordered food at the new restaurant, Leubner said. Lewis' Restaurant also took several Roseadah's menus to hand out there.聽

"The small business owners here 鈥� I'm just overwhelmed 鈥� they're so kind," Leubner said. "It feels like we're all in this together, and it's a good feeling."

"With more time, people became more accustomed to social distancing. It became a habit," Penny said. "I see that as people come here. They're very conscious, patient and respectful."

Indeed, with gorgeous weather that first Sunday, the business was greeted by a nonstop line of people spaced 6 feet apart, said the Millses, of Port Byron. On advice from the Cayuga County Health Department, they and their staff remind customers of that distance when necessary, and sanitize any surfaces that are touched often.聽

That's been a learning curve for both the new owners and their staff of about 25. But that staff, many of whom are college students who worked at Reese's under previous owner Tom Watkins, have been helping the Millses with the rest, they said. The only thing they can't help do is balance the schedule. Jamison said that with all the students home already, it's hard to get everyone hours.聽

Watkins himself was also "completely amazing" as he turned the business over to the Millses, they said. He bought it in the early 2000s from his uncle, Bill Reese, who opened it in a former Carvel in 1973. And Watkins personally showed the new owners everything about operating it, including a 40-hour "boot camp" on making Reese's ice cream the third week of February. Penny, who has taught in the Port Byron school district for 20 years, called it "one of the hardest-working vacations I've ever taken."

"He wants it to continue, to prosper," Jamison said of Watkins and his former business. "He really took the time to make sure we're comfortable in what we're doing."

Now the Millses are making Reese's their own. Though some ask, they don't plan on bringing miniature golf back. There's nothing left of the old course, which was torn down years ago, so it'd be "a huge financial prospect," Penny said. But they will use the land for something else in the future. And they've already added a few flavors to the Reese's lineup, as well as a cinnamon maple oat milk hard ice cream for vegans, made by Byrne Dairy. If it sells well enough, the business could begin making its own plant-based ice cream, Jamison said.

Other additions to the menu include tater tots and a children's meal. The Millses always look for them when they're ordering food, as they have two daughters,聽Mallory and Alivia. And though Reese's customers can't eat inside the dining room 鈥� which features new lighting, decorations, carpeting and paint 鈥� they can still order hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, salads and more to go.

The business is truly a family one for the Millses. Jamison's parents, George and Sharon Mills, are part owners. It was Sharon who showed him a Facebook post in June about the business being for sale, he said. He emailed Watkins the next day for a showing, and the Millses closed on Reese's in November.聽

Jamison, a lifelong resident of Port Byron, had been looking for opportunities like Reese's for awhile. He's worked for a few restaurants over the years, including the Old Erie in Weedsport and the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles. For the last 18 years, he was an employee of Zurich Cinemas, owner of several movie theaters in upstate New York. Penny, meanwhile, is a Jordan native who worked at an ice cream stand in high school and college, then in retail and restaurants before her teaching career.

She and Jamison talked about buying a business like Reese's closer to their retirement, she said.

But when the opportunity presented itself, it "screamed" at them 鈥� the way we all do when ice cream is involved.

"It's been an amazing few weeks," Penny said. "Hopefully we can let people inside soon, so family and friends can enjoy it. We really want it to be a fun, family-friendly and inviting atmosphere."

Behind the black curtains there, employees of the Auburn grocery store answer questions and have their temperature taken before the start of every shift. Those who show symptoms of the virus, or have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, will be asked to go home with pay and contact their medical provider, . A telehealth option will be provided for employees who don't have a doctor. The company's coronavirus disability paid sick leave offers employees full pay, starting day one, without the need for medical documentation from a health care provider.

Employee screenings are the latest step taken by Wegmans, and other stores to protect both them and customers from the coronavirus. Also on Monday, Wegmans announced that it will limit customers inside its stores to 15% to 20% of their capacity. Stores that reach that percentage can ask customers to wait until others leave to enter. BJ's and Walmart also began limiting capacity to about 20% earlier in April, and both the Auburn Walmart and Wegmans have converted their dual two-way entrances into one for entering and one for exiting the stores.

Protective measures previously taken at grocery chains with stores in the Cayuga County area have included聽installing Plexiglas shields in front of cashiers, increasing the number of hand sanitizer stations throughout stores, closing dining and self-serve areas, posting signage that recommends how much distance to maintain from others, and removing shopping baskets.聽

As businesses deemed essential by New York state, all local grocery stores are also subject to a new issued Sunday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo: All essential employees who interact with the public must be provided protective face masks by their employers. Most chains with stores in the Cayuga County area have already started to take this step, including , , Aldi, and . Still, they must be in compliance by 8 p.m. Wednesday, when the state's order takes effect. Employees can bring their own masks, but if they cannot, employers must provide them.

The order comes as more and more employees of grocery stores 鈥� where shoppers have been flocking for supplies 鈥� are being exposed to the coronavirus. United Food and Commercial Workers International Union President Marc Perrone CNBC聽Monday that at least 30 union members have died from the virus, and more than 3,000 have caught it. He additionally urged customers to wear masks and gloves, and to limit their shopping trips, in order to protect the health of grocery employees during the pandemic. More than 23,000 people have from the virus in the U.S.

"This is about life or death," Perrone said. "Workers are being exposed, and they are dying."
