The Cayuga Nation is celebrating the graduation of its first cadet from the U.S. Indian Police Academy in Artesia, New Mexico.
Nation officials traveled to the academy in January to attend the graduation of Officer Jeffrey Davids of the Cayuga Nation Police Department. He completed the Indian Country Police Officer Training Program, consisting of 597.5 hours of training that included written examinations, hands-on lab exercises and practical exercises.
Academy training is tailored to meet the law enforcement needs of federally recognized Indian nations, the Cayuga Nation said in a news release. The academy has been in operation since 1969.
While all members of the nation's police force have experience in local, federal or state law enforcement, Davids is the first new hire to attend the academy, the nation said. He will continue his training to serve the citizens of the Cayuga Nation by completing a regimented field training program under nation police officers and supervisors.
