Ronald J. LaVarnway, 78, of Auburn, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Auburn Community Hospital. Mr. LaVarnway was born in Plattsburg, N.Y., on July 1, 1946, to the late Leo and Elizabeth Colligan LaVarnway.
He was a graduate of SUNY Fredonia and proudly served our country with the United States Army during Vietnam. While teaching at East Middle School, Ronald met his late wife, Patrice. He went on to teach at Christian Brothers Academy, Cayuga Community College, Auburn Correctional Facility and retired from Willard Drug Treatment Center in Ovid; it was at Willard that he served as president of his union.
Ronald liked to stay active in his community; he was the assessor for the Town of Fleming and served on the Development Board in Auburn. He was an avid NY Yankee and Syracuse University fan. He was a dog lover and always enjoyed the time he spent traveling and golfing.
Ronald is survived by his son, Carey LaVarnway; his daughter, Kara (Chuck) Sopata; his significant other, Marilyn Baran; and granddaughter, Nora Sopata.
In addition to his parents; Ronald was predeceased by his wife, Patrice; and his brothers, Michael LaVarnway and Richard LaVarnway .
Calling hours will be on Monday, May 12, from 4 to 6 p.m., in White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., 197 South St. Auburn. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, May 13, at 11 a.m., in St. Mary's Church, Auburn. Burial will be in Fort Hill Cemetery.
