The Cayuga County Department of Motor Vehicles will temporarily relocate for the summer due to the closure of the county office building.Â
Cayuga County Clerk Brian Scanlan said Thursday the DMV office has moved to the Cayuga County Public Safety Building, 7445 County House Road, Sennett. The agency will occupy a front conference room inside the building.Â
"The DMV is currently operating at a limited capacity," Scanlan added. "Therefore, the DMV is not fully open to the public for walk-in transactions at this time."Â
For now, the DMV will accept transactions by appointment only beginning Friday. To make an appointment, visit .
Transactions can be mailed to: Cayuga County Department of Motor Vehicles, 160 Genesee St., Auburn, NY, 13021. Forms can be found on the state DMV website at .
There will be no in-person testing for driver and motorcycle licenses and permits. The DMV office cannot process upgrades to enhanced driver licenses or REAL ID, according to Scanlan.Â
"We are continuing to work on offering these services again in our local office," Scanlan said. "We will advise when we are able."Â
The clerk's office, which oversees the DMV, is among the few agencies most affected by the closure. While other county departments can operate remotely, the DMV regularly interacts with the public.Â
Cayuga County Legislature Chairwoman Aileen McNabb-Coleman announced last week that the building will be closed until the end of August. The closure followed the discovery of vermiculite in a fifth-floor window. The granular material can contain asbestos.Â
The closure coincides with planned roof repairs. The roof was damaged by a windstorm in January. The repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the August.Â
"We greatly appreciate the public's patience and understanding while we navigate this crisis, and we look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Cayuga County," Scanlan said.Â
